It was soon followed by a furrowed brow and a pouty lip:

Then sleep:

... you know, because he has to save up his energy for the evening to keep us awake.
He seems to have moved past that cluster-feeding thing, (thanks for the information about that btw!) but he has been pretty fussy and gassy. I don't have much to compare it to, but I don't really think it's colic. He doesn't cry uncontrollably for hours on end, it's more like he cries really hard but can ultimately be comforted or will stop once he gets all the gas bubbles out. I am waiting to hear back from the pediatrician about whether it's ok to give him mylicon or if there is something else we can do to help relieve the pain.
It's always hard to find that balance between understanding that newborns are hard but their behavior is "normal" and knowing when something is wrong, especially as a first-timer. They say it's a mother's intuition, and I'm sure that I have it (somewhere), but any time I hear his cries or see his quivering lip, it's hard to think that's normal. All I want to do is make him feel better.

I had the same problem - i knew some babies were fussy so how would I now something was wrong. It's amazing though hosw quickly you are able to start really understanding their distinct needs!
