Because I go back to work a week from Monday (!!!!!), I've been squeezing in all my regular maintenance appointments now. Let me just say, my body is falling apart. I had about six appointments this week and have eight next week. It's a full-time job making, re-scheduling and going to them all. I got my oil changed last week. Then I met with the dietician Monday (more on that in another post). Tuesday was the ophthalmologist with a follow up to test my new prescription for contacts next week. Wednesday was a dentist with a slew of follow up appointments. I have to get fillings on both sides of my mouth fixed so they are making me come in two times because they won't numb both sides at once. Then I have to meet with an oral surgeon and an orthodontist for consultations because of some shoddy dental work I got in college.
It's a good story actually. My upper left cuspid never grew in (or came down... It's stuck up in my jaw). So the dentist at the time pulled the baby tooth to see if it would allow the adult tooth to slide in. He glued the baby tooth as a placeholder. Well, you can probably guess what happened. Several months later, whilst biting into a drunken bagel at 4 am on a Sunday my sophomore year of college, the baby tooth came unglued, leaving a big whole in my mouth. I found the only dentist open on a Sunday morning near Columbia on the very upper west side and went in to get it fixed. Well, this guy was not a great quality dentist but since I went there the first day and they took all the measurements, etc.. I kept going back to get the bridge done. I had no idea what I was doing, but I was 20 years old and blindly trusted this guy. Anyway, he did a terrible job and every dentist I've seen since has said as much. I also should have had the adult tooth pulled down or removed because of risk of infection. So now, 10 years later, I am faced with the awesome prospect of getting braces with a wire to pull down the tooth and then putting crowns on the two surrounding teeth that were shaved down to put the bridge on. You guys, I am not talking about invisalign. I am talking about metal braces. Not awesome. It seems like the other option is removing the tooth and re-doing the bridge, but we'll see what the experts say next week. I don't know if I can add insurance coverage when I go back to work, so this may have to wait until next year. Ugh.
I also met with a chiropractor for the first time yesterday. My back is a war zone and he told me as much after examining it. A ridiculous amount of knots in the traps, a 6 inch knot running parallel to my spine (which had been causing the pain, apparently a pinched nerve, that had led me to go to him in the first place), and hips out of alignment plus ever so slight scoliosis. He did a few basic adjustments and my entire body cracked. So now I'm going to him twice a week for four weeks. Each session is an hour long and includes an adjustment and deep tissue massage, mercifully covered by insurance so i just pay a $10 copay.
The timing is funny because on Sunday I started a two week unlimited pass for Bikram yoga ...it is unbelievable. I love yoga but this is the only thing I've found so far that can actually make my back feel better. I've gone three times this week and think I'm going to commit to go at least once a week after my intro pass is up. I'm hoping between that and the chiropractor I will find some relief from the back pain.
I had Timmy's three year checkup recently and Ellie's four month check up is next week. I really need a haircut since its been about 5 months. We are meeting with the dietician in a couple weeks to make a plan of attack.
I am 28 years old. I hope by the time I turn 38, scientists invent ways to replace body parts by re-growing them. New teeth, new eyes and a new back. Should have maxed out our FSA contribution.

about teeth... first, i had a similar issue with an adult tooth too shy to present itself. they chained it and pulled it down using braces. if i remember correctly, it didn't take the tooth too long to come down.
for an unrelated bite problem i had braces put on (yup, metal braces) just before law school graduation. they didn't come off until a few months after i started at the firm. not gonna lie, i was all kinds of self-conscious about how dorky (and young) i looked with braces, but it was only a year and i'm glad i got it taken care of.
hope your things get off to a great start at the new office of the firm!
Hope all your appointments go well! You just reminded me I'm 6 months overdue for a dental check-up. Ahh, I can't keep up with the very little appts I have!
I'm going to have braces in law school. My dentist thinks I need the metal kind. I still need to meet with the orthodontist, so I am holding out hope.
