Mommy Group in the Modern Age

When I created a Facebook account after my junior year of college, I never would have dreamed that I would be using it to make playdates with other moms one day. In fact, I always kind of thought that I would no longer even use Facebook by the time I had a family. Facebook was a social networking site for college students, and it just didn't fit with the image in my head of what a family does. Since that time of course, Facebook has extended to everyone and now almost everyone I know is on there. And here I am, a wife and a mom, updating my status and uploading photos regularly.

I was first told about the Mom's group in my community by a neighbor in my building, but she told me that in order to join, I had to request to join the group on Facebook. Once a member of that group, I would get emails and learn about events.
I have gone to two events and met a few moms at each. I have also made a few mommy friends at the park and the pool. Do you know how we always end our conversations? "I'll friend you on Facebook so we can schedule a playdate sometime." Doesn't this just strike you as something that should be on the commercial where the teenager yells at his parents to stop updating their Facebook status and stop tweeting?

Every mom in this group, from very different backgrounds and of all different ages, uses Facebook and is proficient at it. If I told my own mother about this, she would just roll her eyes and say, "back in my day, we just set up playdates on the telephone!" Welcome to the modern age!

Back in your mom's day, they weren't called "playdates." They were just called "coming over to play."

I still feel weird when I see people in real life that I recognize from facebook but have never met. It feels werid to know so much information about people and barely know THEM. I wish there was a mommy group like that in my neighborhood!
