The other day, in a desperate attempt to get out of packing for the move, PJO suggested that we could go look at baby stuff (which of course, I have wanted to do almost since the day we found out we were pregnant). I was thrown off guard, but jumped at the chance before he could rescind the offer. We drove to BabiesRUs and prepared to be completely overwhelmed.
I actually loved every minute of being in that store. Everything is so cute and comfy looking and the selection is unreal. But I couldn't help noticing that I was the only person in there not visibly pregnant except for the occasional husband. I mean, all these women must have been at least 8.5 months pregnant. Then I felt like the weirdo who isn't really supposed to be there ... either because for all they know, I might not even be pregnant, or because it's way too early to buy anything. I have not yet been inducted into the club of really pregnant women.
So then I started thinking: when do most people start looking at baby stuff? I registered for wedding stuff right when we set a date, but is there a customary time to wait before you register for/buy any baby stuff? Now that I'm typing this out, I realize I know absolutely NOTHING about what you need, what you should buy on your own (as opposed to register for), and what items you should splurge on. I think I need a coach.
Luckily, I won't have to think about this for a little while. We're moving in a week (so nothing new will be bought until we get settled), then we're going back east and to Hawaii, then school starts.
As much as I do not want to look pregnant anytime soon, I really look forward to the time when everyone knows that we're having a baby so I can plan/buy stuff/decorate/etc... Pete's family, our friends and everyone at my office is still in the dark, so for now it's business as usual.

Amalah from amalah.com has a link to her other blog, zero to forty - she goes through every week of pregnancy and even tells you what to buy early and what to wait on. It sounds like you might find it extremely helpful.
Thanks lucky-ladybug! It seems like a great resource!
I didn't show until six months and I felt so weird going into BabysRus not showing! Everyone there was in their PJ's and looked ready to pop. :)
I think a lot of people hold off on the registry and buying stuff until they are out of the "danger zone"- after three months, or after they find out the sex at around 20 weeks. I waited to find out the sex but I was sooo anxious to buy baby stuff because that would seem to make pregnancy feel real.
If you can't wait, go for it! Shopping and prepping is part of the fun stuff!
